Melinda Ferguson Birth and Postpartum Doula CD, PCD (DONA) Nurturing the Whole Family in Their Baby Moon |
|
About MeI became motivated to assist and nurture others in early postpartum through the experience of having my own two children in 2000 and 2004. It was during this time that I came to appreciate how much there is to learn about our new responsibilities as mothers and how overwhelming being a new parent can sometimes be. I was encouraged to spend at least three days in bed following the birth of my second sonto have a Baby Moon similar to the honeymoon a couple would have following their wedding. The Baby Moon concept is very appealing to me as a time for mother and baby to spend together without needing to tend to the other responsibilities of daily life. In early 2004 I began preparing to leave my career as an oceanographer and environmental scientist and become a birth and postpartum doula. I am certified through DONA International as both a Birth and Postpartum Doula. I am also certified through the Northwest Association of Postpartum Doulas (NAPS). I have trained at the Seattle Midwifery School as a Birth and Postpartum Doula. Additional coursework in First Aid, CPR and breastfeeding has been completed. I actively pursue continuing education opportunities. I enjoy helping all mothers and families. In labor and birth I especially enjoy helping women who are striving to have an unmedicated birth, or who are particularly worried about what labor and birth will be like. I feel my skills as a doula are most strongly needed at such a birth. In postpartum, I am particularly interested in working with families having their first child, as I feel there is so much to learn about babies and a great deal of emotional transition for first time parents to work through that can be aided by the help of a postpartum doula. Whatever your situation, I would love to help make this time easier for you. Professional affiliations:
